Resumo
The following study aims to characterise the geometric competence manifested by 6th grade students when solving tasks involving the area of flat figures. For this purpose, the procedures used and written justifications in two tasks are analysed. Students' geometric competence is characterised in terms of the partial meanings of area, taking into account the different concepts, procedures, properties and representations that are mobilised in the resolution of the tasks. The results show that students' geometric competence is limited by the mechanical use of the base x height formula, which hinders the use of geometric procedures when it is not possible to use calculations.
