Abstract

What is now called masculinity has been constructed over time on concepts and prejudices that determine, at least in the popular imagination, what is to be a man, according to the culture. In our society, gender patterns are built even before birth, since there are adjustments to models of femininity and masculinity previously established. Some implications brought about by certain forms of masculinity design claim that the culture of "strong male" entails a lot of damage to the health of men in general. This way, man.s health has been a non-important subject under the social stereotype of the invulnerable man. Thus, some diseases, such as depression, are associated only with the female world, justifying the question made in this article: is there room for pain in males? This paper proposes to describe the analysis of the representations of male depression and suffering men, conducted through interviews with male teachers of a private college of the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. The results show that pain in the male remains a taboo subject for men, mainly due to patriarchal and macho culture.
