Resumen
People with intellectual disabilities often have reading comprehension difficulties. This has meant that the development of their reading skills has been linked to a functional nature and not as a source of pleasure. However, a methodology such as Easy-to-Read aims to make the texts accessible to this people. Although its use is widespread in organizations and public administrations, there are few studies that support its effectiveness. This work is based on the hypothesis that if Easy-to-Read improves the reading comprehension of literary texts in people with intellectual disabilities, and it can also improve their reading pleasure, so they could become autonomous and competent readers. This research has been carried out with young people with intellectual disabilities, and it aims to find evidence that Easy-to-Read literary texts improve comprehension compared to non-adapted texts, and that this in turn improves the reading pleasure of these people. The results suggest that there are significant differences in the reading comprehension of literary texts between those with an Easy-to-Read adaptation and those that are non-adapted. Also participants experienced a bigger reading pleasure when reading Easy-to-Read adapted texts. Therefore, Easy-to-Read could be a valid methodology to develop and improve not only reading comprehension, but also the reading pleasure of people with comprehension difficulties, such as people with intellectual disabilities.
