Abstract

The training program of the psychiatry specialty, in addition to learning the clinical skills and competences, requires that the resident acquires knowledge and gets involved in research activity. It would be desirable to culminate this work with the completion of the doctoral dissertation. However, the beginning of this activity may be confusing and complicated due to the pressure to fulfil other requirements of the training program, the clinical load, and the low homogeneity of the research structure between different centres. The purpose of this article is to serve as a guide for decision-making when it comes to participating in research or enrolling in a doctoral program for residents who are in training. We will try to answer several questions such as: Why to investigate, types of dissertations that can be done, which university to choose, and aspects to consider when choosing a mentor.
