Abstract

This article provides and explanation for the phenomenon of variation in the Spanish 'romancero' (Spanish folk ballads). Drawing on the example of "La mujer the Arnaldos" (Arnaldo’s Wife), this article explores the profound changes undergone by a romance within the Sephardic communities. First, the regional variations of "La mujer de Arnaldos" are thoroughly described according to the different regions in which it has been collected. Then we offer an interpretation of the diegetic changes of this romance by means of extradiegetic causes (from an anthropological perspective): the characteristics of the societies in which this romance was transmitted throughout time
