Abstract

Spain was the eighth country in the world to legalize euthanasia and assisted suicide, until now only recognized in the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg (2002), Switzerland; and, outside Europe, Colombia (1997), Canada (2016), some states of Australia and the United States and, recently (2022) New Zealand.The new Spanish law has some singularities, in contrast to most pro-euthanasia laws in other countries: first, the recognition of a new subjective right to request one's own death from third parties, based on human autonomy and freedom, and a rather restrictive conception of the right to conscientious objection of health professionals, materialized in the implementation of a public registry of objectors
