Resumo

The European Union is a unique and constantly changing integration project. From its origins, after the Second World War and trying to overcome the block policy, it has faced difficult moments derived from the great complexity involved in the development of its dimensions at a supranational level. Nowadays, and due to the changes driven by the consequences of the last economic, financial and budgetary crisis, we live a key moment of its evolution and objectives. Therefore, the thesis of this work is based on the need to situate the debate about the balance between the social and economic objectives pursued by the European Semester, a mechanism that provides support for the stability of the euro zone, deepening the complementarity of mentioned variables, as well as the need for greater inclusion of the social part in the new model of economic governance. In order to facilitate the understanding of the work carried out and to be able to fully deal with all the aforementioned aspects a theoretical review and the status of the question are first developed. Secondly, a balance between the two variants is made, from a historical perspective, exposing the set of progresses in the analysed area. Finally, it ends with a section on conclusions, which offers a compilation of the findings and the most relevant observations reached by the authors.
