In visual research and visual arts based research the images are a decisive part of both the process and the results of the research. A basic criteria of quality in this type of research is that all of the images should be correctly identified with their corresponding image caption. This prevents the merely decorative or spurious uses of images. Consequently, the correct image caption is also decisive in the quality of the research report (Marin-Viadel and Roldan, 2017). As the type of images most frequently represented in visual, artistic and visual arts based research, as well as the functions that they serve in the research report, are quite far removed from the types of figures, graphs and maps that are regulated by the APA standards, APA guidelines, unfortunately, are not much help (American Psychological Association, 2020).
