Abstract

The Royal Conservatory of Music and Declamation María Cristina, founded by the queen consort María Cristina de Borbón-Dos Sicilias, from whom the name of the musical institution was derived in its early years (1830-1854), used as official means of dissemination the Gaceta de Madrid, the Diario de avisos de Madrid and the Guía de Forasteros en Madrid. During the first third of the 19th century, we also found newspapers sections and cultural magazines such as Cartas Españolas or El Artista, which disseminated the academic life and functions of the Conservatory. In a few years the Spanish music press saw an exponential growth, first in cultural magazines and newspapers and over time it acquired its own space in sections of newspapers or specialized magazines in the musical field. This study will carry out an analysis of the main newspapers and magazines, that between 1830 and 1854 wrote news and chronicles about the activity of the Royal Conservatory of Music and Declamation of María Cristina. On the one hand, the process of transition and specialization of periodical publications in the musical field will be examined and, on the other hand, a reconstructive vision of the institution will be presented, which will offer us the double position of the media –defenders and opponents–, deepening among other aspects in the selection process of students and teaching staff as well as in the activity of the pedagogical center.
