Resumen
The main aim of this study is to evaluate the efficacy of a pilot mindfulness-based intervention in a reduced group of patients presenting with chronic, resistant auditory hallucinations, regardless of their primary diagnosis. A single-group pre-post (cohort) empirical study was designed. Intervention consisted of eight 90-minute sessions of mindfulness-based therapy adapted to psychosis on the basis of existing literature. Sessions included guided meditations and metacognitive introspection training. A pre-post assessment was conducted using the Psychotic Symptom Rating Scale (PSYRATS). Follow-up period was 10 weeks. 9 outpatient subjects were recruited, of which 3 completed the study. Results show a clinically significant change in patients’ relationship with their voices, expressed as a reduction of the amount of distress, duration, intensity, negative content, and degree of disruption to daily life. Controllability over voices was also increased. Results support mindfulness as a promising therapeutic tool for patients experiencing chronic psychotic symptoms. Further research is needed in order to collect evidence coming from larger samples and more complex designs.
