The paper aims to study Ortega y Gassets idea of the nation based on the concept of selfgovernment. Thus, we compare his thought with that of Gumersindo de Azcárate, in order to demonstrate the existence of a tradition of liberal nationalism which includes both of them. The thesis is that, based on the notion of self-government, Ortega tries to resolve a problem with which the liberalism has had to deal since its origins: the tension between the ideas of the individual and the nation.
