Resumo

This article will explore Paco Ignacio Taibo II's crime fiction by looking into its main sleuth character: Héctor Belascoarán Shayne. Taibo II adapts the USA hard-boiled tradition that combines the depiction of urban reality and the inherent capacity for critical refection on the political and social quandary to the Mexican context. His objective is to expose the systematic network of illegal practices led by the corrupt Mexican government. The author conceives his private investigator as an antihero, closely resembling the average Mexicancitizen, who fails repeatedly in his fierce struggle against the system. As a result, the character establishes himself as a strong source of awareness-raising, as well as the perfect instrument for the expression of the citizen’s disappointment and frustration.
