Resumen

The Caribbean area, as well as Central and South America have burst with strength and undisputed leadership in the adoption of digital money, either by betting on digital currencies issued and backed by a central bank (CBDC); or by decentralized virtual currencies (DEFI), led by Bitcoin and Ether. We seek to find a reason that leads a country or currency area to opt for one system or the other. We focus our analysis, once we have studied the advantages and disadvantages of the use of virtual currencies, on twelve variables on the use of mobile money extracted from the GFI (Global Findex Indicator), for the years 2011, 2014 and 2017 for all these countries. Whether to go for digital money based on CBDC or DEFI, depends more on a political choice of the leaders of the country in question given that we have not found other distinct evidence or factor that clearly influences and determines the adoption of one system or another.
