Abstract

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is a disease that can suddenly change the lives of patients and their families. It can affect not only motor functions but also such key areas as cognition, personality and behaviour. The unpredictability of its symptoms pose both physical and psychological challenges for carers and for everyone else close to the patient- This briefing takes an initial look at this situation and outlines the main scientific findings. It also gives practical guidelines for psychosocial care when ALS is associated with frontotemporal dementia (FTD). FTD is responsible for most of the mental disorders associated with ALS, and is a decisive factor when carers feel overwhelmed. The focus of interest here is on care-givers, and the material presented is intended to be of use to medical, nursing and other healthcare personnel involved in this process, which is attracting more and more scientific and social interest
