Resum

Neonatal jaundice is a common pediatric problem and it is the major cause for the hospital admissions and readmissions of neonates during the first few days of life. The goal of this study is to know the current situation of neonatal hyperbilirubinemia , the major complication and nursing care. Literature review was carried out by searching in Medline, PubMed, ScienceDirect and CUIDEN databases. The main terms used to literature search were neonatal jaundice, newborns hyperbilirubinemia, newborns jaundice incidence. The incidence of neonatal jaundice in Spain was 1.69/10,000 in 2009. The main treatments are phototherapy, exchange transfusion and drugs. Nurse is the responsible for applying phototherapy correctly, giving the medication and the care of the newborn. Hyperbilirubinemia continues being a common pathology in newborns and a leading causes for admission to neonatal unit in the first few weeks of life. Kernicterus is the most severe complication. There is a high variability in the incidence of neonatal jaundice. Spain had a low incidence in 2009.
