Abstract

Adoption has undergone significant changes throughout history. From its initial conception to facilitate the access to the fatherhood to those couples that for reasons of infertility could not have children, until the present primacy of the superior interest of the child, has occurred a very important evolution that has taken in the taking of awareness of the complexity surrounding adoptive processes. The objective of the present research is to deepen the specific reality of the adoption or care of children with intellectual disability from the perspective of psychosocial intervention: to know and describe the characteristics, dynamics and wellbeing of families who have adopted or welcomed a child with intellectual disability To achieve this goal, a study was carried out with 35 families who have taken the adoption or care of their children with intellectual disability in Madrid (Comunidad de Madrid). Through the experience of the participating families and their testimonies, we can increase our knowledge, improve the adoption processes and, consequently, promote higher levels of quality of life for parents and children.
