The Spanish Civil War (1936-1939), one of the most tragic and dramatic periods in the history of Spain, presents, in music, very open and attractive features in different ways. Despite the harshness of the situation, the limitations and cruelty that were experienced in the day-to-day in the front and the rear, music had a very important role at both sides. In this article we focus on the Central Council of Music, an agency created by the democratic republican government that directed the designs of the music in the Popular front. In 1937 the capital and different establishments related with it, were transferred from Madrid to Valencia because of the war. In the same year, in the month of June, and with this situation, the Council arose, continuing with the work made before by the National Board of Music. Despite the difficulties, the Central Council of Music tried to create new standards and give an answer to the problems of the previous period. In order to do it, the Council tried to organize Musical Missions, courses to train people in the front and the rear in music learning and create the National Concert Orchestra. The Council's ideology had the aim of encourage musicological research and musical composition, edition of music and books, conducting concerts and festivals in different parts of the Spanish geography and the magazine publishing among many others activities. Particularly remarkable is the publication of a magazine called Música.
